Here are a few things you might want to know about these products: 1. In the US, a candle manufacturer can legally call his product "Pure Beeswax" if there is as little as 15% actual beeswax in the candle. The rest can be parafin, soy, or any other wax. This is only important because parafin and all other candle ingredients EXCEPT beeswax add carbon to our atmosphere as they burn. Beeswax -- that wonderful organic byproduct of our best friends in the natural world -- honey bees -- not only does not add carbon to the atmosphere as it burns -- it actually cleans some of the carbon in the atmosphere. The natural byproduct of burning beeswax is cleaner air! Parafin -- that bugaboo byproduct of petroleum refining processes -- adds carbon to the air in your house every time you burn it. You may have noticed the black soot inside candle jars -- well, it's inside your house, too, and that soot is nothing more than carbon. A fine, powdery pollutant -- especially bad for asthmatics and all those with respiratory problems. 2. Pure, unbleached, natural 100% beeswax is not a simple thing to find unless you've got your own honey bees. It's fairly expensive compared to those "Pure Beeswax" candles that are actually 85% parafin. Parafin is cheap cheap cheap -- and for good reason. It's basically residue. Scrap. 3. Natural salt tealight and votive candle holders are everywhere. You can buy them at the flea market, the gift shop, or the mall (does anybody actually go to malls anymore except 12-year-olds?) You can buy them on eBay. There are two or three places on the net (with a dozen mirror sites each) that will sell them to you by the gross. Some claim to be made from "Himalayan" natural salt; some just call their salt "rock salt" -- possibly from Utah or Michigan. Either way, it all comes from salt mines (there are dozens of these all over the world.) The color of rock salt depends on the presence of other minerals -- it's all geology. Claims about coming from the Himalayan Mountains probably have something to do with mysticism and Buddism -- but magical, mystical, or just geological -- the salt comes out transparant, white, gray, yellow, beige, gold, orange, blood red and all kinds of mottled and beautiful mixtures. Chunks of this rock that don't qualify as culinary grade salt can be ground into road salt to help your winter driving, while others become animal salt-licks, and still others become electric lamps, sculptures, and candle holders. Geology is a wonderful thing. 4. There are claims made about both salt lamps/candle holders and beeswax that go like this: They clean the air of dust, pollens, polutants, dander, bacteria and other contageons. The garbage in our air is held aloft by positively charged ions -- which makes them "float" or remain airborn -- and thus inhaleable. Both salt lamps and beeswax produce negative ions -- which couple with the airborn positive ions (think magnets attracting) so that the +charged junk is neutralized, no longer held airborn by a +charge, and pulled by gravity to the ground (or the table top -- whichever it hits first.) Some internet sites claim this +/- charged ion process actually removes enough crap from the air to make life easier for asthmatics and those with respiratory problems. Others claim that this process helps people relax. De-stress. Sleep better. Breath better. Heal better. But regardless of how serious or not you take all these claims, one thing remains: Natural, 100% pure beeswax candles are non-poluting, wonderful smelling (they smell like fresh, warm honey), long (looooooong) lasting, and beautiful to look at when poured, molded & sculpted by master candle makers. The glow and warmth they give off is unequaled by any other candle. AND Natural geological salt -- unbleached, carved, rough cut or smooth, is absolutely beautiful when lit from within. If you combine the 2, you get an almost magical glow. And if you are in the +/- ion charge camp, consider this: If you have an electric salt lamp running on electricity, it is probably adding as much pollutant as it is neutralizing. If you're burning a parafin tealight or votive inside a salt candle holder -- the parafin is producing more (MORE!) pollutant than the salt can neutralize. But, if you burn a 100% pure natural beeswax tealight or votive in your salt rock -- you don't add any polutants at all -- and you neutralize already present +charged ions! | Some Notes and Suggestions on the Care & Feeding of 100% Natural Beeswax Candles Here is the information from theh makers of these excellent beeswax candles (a Canadian small business run by a family of traditional beeswax candle makers, called Philoxia.) ********** Wick Length and Maintenance The most important factor with a Beeswax Candle is to keep the wick trimmed between 3/16" (5 mm) to 3/8" (9 mm). If the wick gets longer than 1/2 inch, your candle will be burning with a very large flame which will melt a wider ‘pool’ in a very short time. You then have a 1/2 inch wick that proceeds to melt and burn up your tealight/votive wax even faster. To achieve the longest burn time, burn your candle for 1/2 - 1 hour at a time -- allowing it to cool completely between burnings Before relighting, trim your wick back to the 5mm suggested length. ******* LEFTOVER WAX CAN BE "RECYCLED"!!!! Once your candle has burned completely, you may find traces of wax remain in the bottom of the cup or candle holder. No matter how large or small these leftovers are, use your fingertips (on warm or cool wax only!) to form buttons of wax that can be "fed" into a burning candle (CAREFULLY!) to keep it alive longer.
